Smith had a short recording career for Vocalion in 1930-1931. Among the songs recorded was his trademark song, "Howlin Wolf Blues" in four parts.
Further recordings made in 1935 "were found to be faulty." (Blues and gospel records 1890-1943 (1997), p. 825)
